Expert day

ON OUR OWN BEHALF

Symposium for people affected by psychiatry

on September 1, 2011 in Berlin

The announcement read:

The symposium for people affected by psychiatry IN THEIR OWN INTEREST will take place within the framework of the project “Control of those affected: Promotion of self-help possibilities and rights of people affected by psychiatry”. This day is dedicated to the international conference In Search of the Rose Garden: Implementing Real Alternatives to Psychiatry in order to offer opportunities for exchange among people affected by psychiatry. We would like to discuss together and among ourselves how our experiences and knowledge can be used to develop a better way of dealing with madness and crises, as well as a different understanding of help.

Here are some topics we would like to discuss depending on the interest of the participants, but everyone is welcome to bring in their own topics.

  • What terms do we use to describe ourselves?
  • What do we need to be able to support others?
  • What does help mean?
  • Living in assisted living facilities
  • Psychiatric patients on the first job market
  • Full responsibility or special rights?
  • Our role in the trialogue
  • Possibilities of cooperation with relatives
  • Cooperation with professionals
  • Role of psychiatry patients in projects controlled by the patient
  • What does the diagnosis do to the self-image?
  • The dilemma of weaning
  • Experiences of violence and psychiatry
  • Argument culture and cooperation among affected persons
  • Experiences of clients in affected-controlled projects
  • Psychiatric patients and research
  • Self-medication through alcohol and illegal drugs
  • Dealing with legal care
  • Access to legal advice
  • Job center and psychiatry
  • Living in poverty
  • Psychiatric experience and parenthood

We have chosen the method of the World Café because it allows conversations in small groups on their own choice of topics. The World Café creates a space where the experiences and ideas of the participants can be brought in. At the beginning of the day, this method of working will be explained in detail to everyone. Previous knowledge is not necessary. Every person affected by psychiatry is welcome and it is up to each person how much he/she wants to contribute. Participation is free of charge and requires no preparation.
